Kebbi State Promises Support For the Military to Combat Banditry

Governor of Debbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris, has reiterated the administration’s pledge to provide sufficient support to law enforcement, particularly the Nigerian Army, in combating banditry within the state.

He went on to say that he was pleased with the Nigerian Army’s efforts to combat banditry and other illegal activities in the state.

During a courtesy visit to Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday, the governor disclosed this to Brig.-Gen. Ibikunle Ademola-Ajose, the acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 8 Division, Sokoto.

Regarding Kebbi State security, he said, “It is common knowledge that the military has inspired pride in our nation. We have no choice but to express our gratitude to the troops and officers”.

“When I became governor, people abandoned their cities and villages, as well as their farmlands, out of dread of banditry, particularly in the southern section of Kebbi state”.

“Everyone knows that Kebbi is an agrarian state, particularly in the south, where we produce a lot of cash crops.” We got down with the security agencies and put everything on the table; we X-rayed and came to a conclusion, which gave positive results.

The governor also stated that his administration would do everything possible to help the military succeed, assuring them that “because of your efforts, many people now return to their farms.

“I charge you with continuing your efforts to allow people to sleep in their homes with their eyes closed and travel to their farms without fear of bandits.

“Sani Ahmed has done well, and we cannot count the number of times we have not allowed him to rest until the issue of insecurity has been resolved.

“As a result, we have had no regrets about working with him.

Idris recommended the new acting GOC to build on the legacy of his predecessor, who, according to him, faithfully executed his constitutional obligations.

Earlier, Ademola-Ajose, the acting GOC, described his visit as nostalgic and homecoming, saying, “I was in Kebbi two decades ago, serving as a Captain in 1 Battalion.

“As a result, returning home feels really good. “I’m here to announce myself as the new GOC 8 Division.

“I sincerely thank His Excellency and the people of Kebbi for their support of the military, particularly in the war against criminals.”

The new GOC hailed the state government’s backing for the military, particularly the provision of vehicles and other logistical support, as a moral booster to the personnel, allowing them to execute their constitutional role properly.

In Essence

Kebbi State’s dependence on agriculture makes it particularly vulnerable to the impacts of banditry. The governor’s focus on ensuring that farmers can return to their fields safely is vital for both the local economy and food security.

The acting GOC’s acknowledgment of the state’s support for the military, including logistical contributions, reinforces the importance of community and government backing in security operations. Such support can significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the military.
