The workers at Kenya’s main international airport have ended their day-long strike on Wednesday, according to a union official. This announcement had come after guarantees had been made by the government that a plan to lease the airport to an Indian company would only move forward with the union’s approval.
The workers, armed with plastic trumpets had scuffled with the police, earlier causing cancellations and delays for hundreds of passengers. The workers had protested against a plan to lease the airport to Adani Group for 30 years, in exchange for $1.85 billion of investment by Adani into the airport’s expansion.
According to the workers, they feared the lease would result in job cuts.
What They’re Saying
Francis Atwoli, the secretary general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions, had said that the government and the Kenya Aviation Workers Union had agreed to review the proposals’ documents within 10 days and if any agreement moves forward, the union must approve it. Atwoli added that both parties had agreed that the participating individuals in the strike would be punished.
