Opposition politicians in Kenya have expressed their hurt over the United States ambassador’s “insensitive” comment about Kenya being the most ‘secure’ democracy in Africa.
Ambassador Meg Whitman, the US Ambassador had made the statement on Wednesday, August 16, while addressing to Kenyan leaders, President William Ruto included.
Ms Whitman said had marvelled at Kenya’s very credible 2022 elections.
“It was nothing short of remarkable.” She had said.
Meanwhile, recall that the Kenyan elections had been deemed inaccurate and unverifiable by the Kenyan opposition parties, who had also contested the results in the Supreme Court.
Oburu Odinga, a senator from an opposition party and brother to well known opposition leader, Raila Odinga, had remarked that he was hurt by Ms Whitman’s comments was inconsiderate and thoughtless as praising Kenya’s democracy at a time when the government had criminalised the citizens right to demonstrate and gather as a crowd.
The opposition party leaders had also, stated that Ms Whitman’s comments could damage the present negotiations being held between the Azimio la Umoja opposition coalition and Kenya Kwanza (the ruling coalition).
The opposition leaders had also urged the ambassador to “be sentient, mature and avoid making discordant comments likely to undermine the trust among Kenyans.
