Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is negotiating a new contract and his representatives are demanding a £180k-a-week salary plus bonuses, according to reports.
The 19-year-old academy product was part of Ruben Amorim’s starting team, establishing himself as midfield successor to Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in the twilight of their careers.
Though he remains far from the finished product, Mainoo was already being linked with a proposed Chelsea move in January, any sale now or in future would be profit in the bank for United as they fall far of the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rule (PSR). But the club’s preference is to tie him down rather than cash in.
United have reopened talks with Mainoo’s camp, according to the Daily Mail, in order to agree a contract that reflects his importance at the club as well as his growing stature in the England national side. The teen dazzled at Euro 2024, injecting desperately needed freshness into Gareth Southgate’s midfield.
United would look for £70m-£80m for the talented young man, who can play in many roles in midfield, if negotiations break down.
Mainoo, who is currently out with calf injury, has missed United’s last three Premier League matches and FA Cup exit. And, he will miss the all-important Europa League clash versus Real Sociedad.
