The Nigeria Police Force has fired former police inspector Richard Gele after he was exposed in a trending video dated July 25, 2022, defending and excusing official misconduct and the extortion of members of the public. Prior to his termination, the former Inspector, AP/No. 188547, was assigned to Police Mobile Force 77 Squadron in Okene, Kogi State, and sent to the Itobe-Anyigba Road to ensure the safety of drivers and commuters. The incident took place along this path. The Benue State native who was fired as an inspector joined the Nigeria Police Force in September 2000. The officer has been un-kitted and delivered to the Kogi State Commissioner of Police for further action.
His dismissal came after he was subject to internal disciplinary procedures and was cleared of all accusations following the laws in force that govern the behavior of police officers. However, his dismissal and de-kitting imply that he is no longer a member of the Nigeria Police Force going forward. Usman Baba, the IGP, ordered all employees to abstain from extortion, unprofessionalism, corruption, and other inappropriate behaviors while stressing the administration’s commitment to leaving the nation with policing standards that are in line with international best practices.
Additionally, he exhorted police personnel all around the country to act with admirable bravery and patriotism while performing their duty.
