Famous ex-pop star, Kris Wu, has just been sentenced to 13 years in jail after being found guilty of rape, according a Chinese court on Friday, November 25. This was after a scandal that drew a lot of outrage and widespread condemnation.
According to the court in Beijing’s Chaoyang district, Wu was sentenced to “11 years and six months of imprisonment for rape” and an additional imprisonment of “one year and ten months for the crime of ‘gathering’ people to commit adultery”.
Altogether, he will serve a 13-year term before being deported, the lawcourt had said.
Wu, according to AFP had originally risen to fame as a member of the K-pop boyband EXO, before exiting the group in 2014 to launch a very successful solo career as a singer, actor, model and variety show judge.
Recall that Nineteen-year-old student Du Meizhu had in 2021, accused Wu of date-raping her when she was 17. This incident had led to public criticism and lots of luxury brands dropping deals with him.
More alleged victims had spoken out after Meizhu, accusing Wu’s staff of predatory behaviour, which included acts like inviting them to boozy karaoke parties.
