The 27-year-old, who has openly stated he has dreams of claiming the individual award for the first time in his career, thinks he’s proven his worth over the last few months.
Mbappe has netted 50 goals in 52 games for Real Madrid since the start of last season, only Harry Kane of Bayern Munich has netted more club goals in Europe’s five major leagues during this period.
France captain also the top scorer at the World Cup with 10 goals and overall the most prolific scorer at the tournament with 22 goals.
Mbappe told RFI that individual performances should be a big influence in who takes home the award.
“I’ve had a good year. It’s been a very good year from an individual point of view and I think that is the most important criteria for the Ballon d’Or,” said the Portugal star.
“I was the top scorer in all the big competitions so hopefully this will be a good year for me and I have a feeling I will be.”
The striker could be up against Kane and Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal.
On not winning, he said ‘I would be disappointed. My competitive spirit would be affected.
“By then, I think it’s going to be my competitive spirit that’s going to take a hit,” Mbappe said.
