The Lagos State Government has explained its decision to ban single-use plastics and Styrofoam, but it will not include PET bottles and sachet water in this ban. The ban will start in January 2025 and is meant to reduce the environmental harm caused by plastic waste.

Bankole Michael Omoniyi, Director of Climate Change and Environmental Planning, said the government did a lot of research before making this decision. The items that will be banned are:

  • – Nylon bags thinner than 40 microns
  • – Plastic utensils
  • – Plastic straws
  • – Styrofoam cups and plates

Omoniyi also stressed the importance of making companies responsible for their products, so they help with waste management.

The government wants to make sure that this ban does not cause job losses or hurt local businesses.
