The Yoruba-language film “Lakatabu,” directed and produced by renowned actor Odunlade Adekola, has made waves in Nollywood. Garnering nearly ₦65 million, it stands as the second-highest-grossing movie overall, with a total box office gross of ₦64.8 million.

The gripping trailer follows the story of Lakatabu, portrayed by Adekola, an armed robber wielding magical powers, who instills terror, commits kidnappings, and murders. The plot intensifies when Lakatabu begins receiving threats from rivals, exploring his challenges, the fear he incites, and the repercussions of his actions.

Topping the highest-grossing list is the Hollywood action comedy “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” featuring Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, which grossed ₦62.2 million. Throughout June, Hollywood films dominated Nigeria’s box office, according to CEAN data. This trend highlights Nigerian cinema-goers’ strong preference for Hollywood content over Nollywood.

In May, the last Nollywood film to top the charts was Bolanle Austen-Peters’ “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti,” which grossed nearly ₦47 million from May 17 to May 23, 2024. Other Nollywood films making the current list include Biodun Stephen’s “Muri and Ko,” Dolapo Adigun’s debut “Criminal,” and Ayeny T. Steve’s “Offshoot,” grossing ₦22.3 million, ₦4.1 million, and ₦2.7 million, respectively.
