Speaking on the signing of Borussia Dortmund player, Akanji, Pep Guardiola, the Man City head coach has revealed that they had to sign Manuel Akanji because of Laporta’s injury.

Yesterday which was the deadline for the transfer window to close, saw Mancity sign Akanji from Dortmund for a fee of €17.5m, and such a hasty decision was influenced by Laporta’s inability to feature in matches due to the injury he sustained on his knee, and currently is undergoing surgery.

According to Guardiola, they have four trustworthy defenders, but Laporta and Nathan have been off the pitch due to injury, so they had to bring in Akanji, who has just one year left in his contract with Borrusia Dortmund. Because he has a lot of experience and is definitely what they need now, they had to go for him. Guardiola further added that he is very happy that they signed Akanji

“We have four incredible center-backs, but sometimes we’ve had it tough with injuries.”

“Some are getting better but a month or month and a half [for Laporte] and Nathan [Ake] could not play [the last two games].

“We had an opportunity to bring him [Akanji], one year left in Dortmund, a lot of experience, he’s perfect for what we need and we’re very pleased to have him here as competition,” Guardiola told a news conference on Friday.
