France clinched their spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Belgium, thanks to Randal Kolo Muani’s last-minute goal. The win marked France’s fifth consecutive triumph over Belgium in major tournaments, continuing their dominance in these high-stakes clashes.

In a match touted as a clash of titans between two of FIFA’s top-three ranked nations, the early action failed to live up to the hype. Both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances in the opening half. Belgium’s first real threat came from a deflected Kevin De Bruyne free-kick that forced a save from French goalkeeper Mike Maignan. On the other end, France’s best opportunity of the half saw Marcus Thuram narrowly miss with a header from a Jules Koundé cross.

The second half saw a slight uptick in intensity. Aurélien Tchouaméni, pulling the strings from midfield, tested Belgium’s Koen Casteels with a powerful shot from distance. Belgium, however, came closest to breaking the deadlock when Yannick Carrasco’s effort was heroically blocked by Theo Hernández, denying a seemingly certain goal.

As the match edged towards extra time, Belgium’s De Bruyne again came close, only to be thwarted by a brilliant save from Maignan. The game seemed destined for a stalemate until the dying moments when Kolo Muani struck. His shot deflected off Jan Vertonghen, wrong-footing Casteels and nestling into the net, sealing the win for France.

France will now face either Portugal or Slovenia in the quarter-finals, maintaining their hopes of adding another European title to their collection. Meanwhile, Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ saw another campaign end in disappointment, unable to overcome their French rivals in a crucial encounter.
