The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is facing escalating tensions, marked by tit-for-tat strikes that threaten to unravel the agreement brokered less than a week ago.
On Monday, Lebanon witnessed it’s deadliest day of strikes after the ceasefire arrangement. Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon killed nine people following Hezbollah’s rocket fire into Israeli-occupied territory. Hezbollah claimed its actions were in response to Israeli violations of the truce, including near-daily attacks since the agreement took effect last Wednesday.
Israel’s Warning to Lebanon
Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, issued a stern warning on Tuesday during a visit to the Israeli Defense Forces near the Lebanese border.
“If we return to war, we will act with strength, go deeper,” Katz said. He emphasized that if the ceasefire collapses, Israel would no longer distinguish between Hezbollah and the Lebanese state, potentially targeting all of Lebanon, including its capital, Beirut.
Disputes Over Ceasefire Violations
While U.S. and French officials have privately accused Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement, Israeli leaders argue their actions enforce the truce. UNIFIL reported approximately 100 Israeli breaches since the truce began. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich defended Israel’s actions, stating that the military was responding decisively to threats.
Hezbollah’s Response and Retaliation
In response to Israeli strikes, Hezbollah launched rockets at Israeli-occupied Shebaa Farms, which landed in open areas without causing casualties. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attack a “serious violation,” leading to widespread airstrikes across southern Lebanon.
Ceasefire Terms and Challenges
The ceasefire, designed to last 60 days, requires Hezbollah fighters to retreat 40 kilometers from the Israel-Lebanon border and Israeli forces to withdraw from Lebanese territory. Lebanon is also expected to increase oversight of Hezbollah’s activities near the Litani River. Despite these terms, ongoing hostilities jeopardize the agreement’s stability.
Israel’s Stance on Enforcement
Israel Katz reiterated Israel’s commitment to enforcing the ceasefire.
“We will act with full force to enforce all the understandings of the ceasefire agreement, and we will respond with maximum response and zero tolerance,” he stated.
Bottom Line: Outlook for Peace
The recent escalation raises doubts about the durability of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire. As tensions continue to mount, the prospect of a lasting truce remains uncertain.
