As part of ongoing rescue efforts in the aftermath of the flood disaster in Maiduguri and its surrounding areas, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammed Lawal Yusuf, has barred human and vehicular movement on the collapsed Lagos Bridge.
According to news reports, the CP had visited the collapsed bridge on Saturday to evaluate the level of damage and consider the possible mitigation strategies when he had made the announcement.
SP Ahmed Wakil, the Supervising Police Public Relations Officer for the North-East, had in a statement issued on Saturday revealed that the decision had come after a technical assessment by specialists who revealed the potential risks if the remaining part of the bridge became overwhelmed by heavy weights.

“CP Mohammed Lawal Yusuf expressed his sympathies to those affected by the disaster and called for public cooperation during this challenging period,” the statement concluded.
