The Federal Capital Territory, FCT Police Command, has confirmed that at least two persons were wounded in an explosion that occurred near the Bureau of Public Enterprise premises in Maitama, Abuja.
It was gathered that the area was previously thrown into panic following a loud sound that meant an explosion had occurred in the area.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer in the territory, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident happened when refuse evacuators were setting fire to rubbish wastes in the area.
The statement further added that upon the sound of explosion, a rapid response team and members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were dispatched to gauge the situation in the area.
The PPRO highlighted that further investigations suggest that an overheated metal refuse container, triggered by intense heat, exploded, leading to two refuse evacuators being injured.
The victims have since been rushed to Maitama General Hospital where they are presently receiving medical attention.
Meanwhile, the FCT Police Command has urged the members of the public to practice caution and refrain from carelessly disposing metal containers as they were more likely to explode unlike their plastic or rubber counterparts .
