A 60-year-old individual has been given a suspended jail sentence after he confessed to sending racially offensive messages targeting the England defender Jess Carter during the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament.
Nigel Dewale, who was using the username “Bogeyman, ” made the offensive comments that revolved around Carter’s race and bogusly linked her to some serious offenses. The abuse happened while England was defending their European title successfully.
At Blackburn Magistrates’ Court, Dewale got a sentence of six weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months. He was also mandated to do 10 days of community work, was given a four-year football banning order, put under a three-month curfew, and was fined £239.
District Judge Tony Watkin stated that the culprit had come “very close indeed” to getting a prison sentence immediately; however, he considered that there were mitigating circumstances, including Dewale being the main carer for his epileptic 20-year-old daughter.
The Football Association has strongly condemned the incident, and the chief executive, Mark Bullingham, has called the abuse “disgusting racism.”Carter, who is currently at NJ/NY Gotham FC in the United States, had disclosed that she had taken a break from social media after being subjected to the same type of abuse during last year’s tournament.
