After a 4-1 thrashing of Athletic Club in the second leg, at Old Trafford, the English giants nailed a 7-1 aggregate scoreline and set up an all-English final against Tottenham Hotspur.
With a 3-0 deficit from the first leg, Athletic started well and took the lead in some style by Mikel Jauregizar with a long-range shot. The Spaniards tried for more goals before the half-hour mark, but United just about had their own chance through Alejandro Garnacho, who wasted a great opportunity with a faint chip.
Athletic kept their pressures on after the break, but they were unable to create the openings for goals. United then hit back in style with three substitutions advised for the last 20 minutes of the match. Mason Mount made it 1-1 with a calm finish, before Casemiro climbed highest to finish off a pinpoint free-kick from Bruno Fernandes.
Late goals poured in. Rasmus Hojlund got the third goal off Amad Diallo’s pass, and Mount sealed his brace with an empty-net within a textbook blunder from the keeper.
The result takes their unbeaten run into Europe this season and into their ninth European final. The Red Devils now prepare to face Spurs in a thrilling final for silverware and a Champions League spot.
