Well, brace yourselves, United fans, because it’s déjà vu all over again! Manchester United’s downward spiral in the league continued on a gloomy Saturday afternoon as they succumbed to a second consecutive defeat right in their own backyard, courtesy of Crystal Palace.
Just four days ago, the Red Devils triumphed over Palace with a convincing 3-0 victory in the EFL Cup. But oh, how the tables turned! This time, it was the Eagles’ turn to spread their wings of vengeance, and they did so with style, courtesy of Joachim Anderson’s brilliant strike.
Now, here’s the kicker—Manchester United dominated most of the match. Rain poured down in Manchester, but goals poured down for the Eagles. Mason Mount, making his first league start in six weeks for Man Utd, had a golden chance to level the score but sent his header soaring into the heavens on the 70th minute.
Three minutes later, they got even closer! Alejandro Garnacho, the substitute magician, whipped in a cross from the left, and the ball, after a double Palace deflection, decided to tease the far post before sauntering away. Garnacho himself tried his luck but saw his shot deflected wide. Oh, the drama!
But hold onto your seats; Palace had their own script to write. They clung so tight to their lead. Roy Hodgson’s men, despite resting key players, transformed into an unyielding force. Even when the Red Devils knocked on the door, goalkeeper Sam Johnstone stood tall, making two crucial saves in the second half.
Manchester United, despite all their efforts, couldn’t find that elusive equalizer. And so, the Eagles soared to victory, rising above their opponents to claim ninth place, while the hosts took a slight tumble to 10th.
Ah, and let’s not forget, the Chelsea’s curse appears to be casting its shadow over Manchester United this season! Who would’ve thought?
