Renowned global payment company, Mastercard, has sped up efforts to remove the first–use, PVC plastics from payment cards on its network by 2028.
According to the company, the move would help to reinforce its sustainability commitments and scales the accessibility of more sustainable card offerings for consumers opting for a way to reduce the environmental impact of their wallet.
The rule change will see all the recently made cards certified by Mastercard to assess their composition and sustainability claims; the certification will then be further checked by an independent third-party auditor. Once a card has been validated and given the green light, it can be imprinted with a Card Eco Certification mark.
