Mbappé and PSG in €700m Legal War Which Could Not Get Hotter

Kylian Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain are involved in a colossal legal battle with a value exceeding €700 million, and the two parties are responding to each other’s allegations of unpaid wages, contract disputes, and fraudulent activities by filing more lawsuits.

After the departure of Mbappé to Real Madrid in 2024, he is the one who is to pay more than €260 million in compensation to Paris Saint-Germain in a counter-suit as per the latest development. This comes after the initial claim for €55 million of the unpaid salary in the last season of the player in Paris. The lawyer of the footballer asserts that the club not only failed to meet the terms of the contract but also gave the player “moral harassment” by entrapping him in the “loft” of the club at the beginning of the 2023–24 season.

Besides, the French star wants his contract as a fixed-term one to be changed to a permanent one, which then would give him the right for severance and more bonuses.

The same Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand, reacts to the lawsuit vehemently and responds with a damage claim of €440 million. The team alleges that Mbappé’s choice not to activate the clause for the third year extension, an option entirely in his hands, caused the club not to be able to get a transfer fee and, thus, to get the image of the club harmed. Moreover, they contend that he kept his decision to go a secret for 11 months and dubbed it as “deceptive behaviour.”

The disagreement originated from the extension of the contract of Mbappé in 2022 after which PSG thought that their long-term future with Mbappé was guaranteed. They were left empty-handed and, accordingly, he moved abroad on a free transfer, turning down all the offers one of which was a record €300 million bid from Al Hilal.

PSG on their side insist that Mbappé violated “good faith” and an alleged “gentleman’s agreement,” although his attorneys argue that such an arrangement has no legal authority.
With neither of them willing to give in, the fight in court is likely to be as loud and costly as one of the most intense battles of football ‍‌‍‍‌history.
