Argentina captain Lionel Messi is set to play in Tuesday’s Copa América semi-final against Canada in New Jersey, despite ongoing concerns about his hamstring. Coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed Messi’s availability in a press conference on Monday, ahead of the match at MetLife Stadium.

Messi, 37, returned to action in Argentina’s quarter-final victory over Ecuador after missing the final group-stage game due to injury. Although he played the entire match, he appeared physically hampered and missed a penalty in the shootout that decided the game at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

“Leo is fine, he finished well, so tomorrow he will be part of the match, we are calm,” Scaloni stated. “His level looks good. He is essential for us.”

Argentina and Canada will face each other for the second time in the tournament, following their opening Group A match where the defending champions secured a 2-0 victory over the CONCACAF side. Scaloni anticipates a different encounter this time, with both teams looking to adjust their strategies.

“All coaches take notes to correct mistakes and hurt our opponents,” Scaloni remarked. “Each coach will have to do something different. We will try to have the ball and stop them from playing their game.”

Scaloni highlighted the physical and aggressive nature of Canada, who recently advanced past Venezuela in a penalty shootout. He acknowledged the challenge posed by Canada’s strong and technically skilled players, under the leadership of coach Jesse Marsch.

“Canada has players who are physically strong and also technically good, with a coach who has conveyed an aggressive way of playing,” Scaloni noted. “They have made things difficult for all teams. Physically it’s difficult to match them, but with our assets, we hope to play the game on our side.”

As Argentina prepares for the semi-final, Messi’s fitness will be a critical factor in their bid to secure a spot in the Copa América final.
