Miami Mayor Francis Suarez Ends Presidential Campaign

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has officially suspended his presidential campaign, becoming the first prominent Republican candidate to do so. This decision follows his failure to qualify for the first primary debate held last week.

In a statement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Suarez, 45, expressed his ongoing commitment to improving the nation for all Americans. He initially entered the presidential race in June, emphasizing a vision for a youthful, inclusive, and culturally diverse campaign.

As a Cuban-American leader who had been dedicated to fostering a tech-driven economic resurgence in Miami, Suarez was the sole Hispanic candidate in the Republican field and the third candidate from Florida, alongside former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

While announcing the suspension of his campaign, Suarez pledged to continue amplifying the voices of the Hispanic community, which constitutes the fastest-growing voting group in the United States. In his online statement, he also criticized the Biden administration on matters like inflation and crime.

Given the dominance of Trump in the race, Suarez faced an uphill battle from the outset. Most opinion polls positioned DeSantis as a distant second, with Suarez typically ranking toward the bottom of the candidate roster.

Suarez’s relationships with both Trump and DeSantis had been strained. He did not endorse Trump in his 2020 reelection campaign and had voiced criticism of some of DeSantis’ COVID-19 pandemic-related policies.

Additionally, Suarez faced scrutiny for championing cryptocurrency firms like FTX, which eventually went bankrupt after purchasing naming rights to Miami’s basketball arena. Nonetheless, during his tenure as mayor, Miami witnessed an influx of conventional tech companies and affluent investors, contributing to the city’s status as a leading international tourist destination, bolstered by a construction boom.
