Social media has been plunged into chaos over the news of the Christian girl that was beaten to death and set ablaze by a mob for allegedly blaspheming against the Islamic faith and criticizing Prophet Mohammed (SAW). Deborah Christian, the girl, was a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Wamako where she met her untimely death.

Accused of making defamatory comments against the Holy Prophet, an angry mob tracked her to the school’s security post where she had taken refuge following warnings to flee. According to eyewitness reports, the mob overpowered the guards and dragged the girl outside where she was set upon and beaten to death. A man who has yet to be identified was captured setting her still body ablaze.

Discourse on Social Media sites like Twitter has been high with many calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the mob and others still praising their actions and saying that Christian had only reaped what she sowed. Others have pointed out that this is is is only the latest in the long history of the Northern region’s infamous intolerance of other religions and creeds and expressed disbelief that the members of the mob would be punished.

As Nigerians battle it out online, authority figures are yet to make a statement, with the only action taken so far being the order for the immediate closure of the school.
