Monarch Reveals Terrorists Tried to Infiltrate Kwara with Bizarre Warning

A traditional ruler in Kwara State has revealed that terrorists sent a chilling and deceptive letter to his community before launching a devastating attack that killed over 100 people, raising urgent questions about security failures and a new tactic of ideological infiltration in Nigeria’s north-central region.

The monarch of the Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area, Umar Bio Salihu, disclosed that the assailants wrote to him, bizarrely stating their intention “to preach” before their assault. This claim is corroborated by Amnesty International, which reported that the terrorists had been distributing religious leaflets in the area for five months prior to the massacre.

A Calculated Attack on a Leader and His Family

The attackers’ first target was the traditional leader’s home. Salihu, who was away at the time, returned to find his house razed to the ground. In a horrific act, two of his children—reportedly medical students—were executed in front of their home before it was set ablaze. His wife and other children were abducted and remain missing.

“The terrorists wanted residents to renounce the Nigerian government and follow their teachings,” Salihu stated, condemning their doctrine as “an extremist version of Islam” that was “against what the Quran teaches.”

The Community Describes the Onslaught

Resident accounts paint a picture of a coordinated, large-scale assault. “The terrorists came into the communities in multitudes,” said Woro resident Abdulla Umar Usman, describing an overwhelming force that left residents helpless. The attack resulted in widespread destruction, with several houses burnt alongside the staggering loss of life.

The violence has prompted Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to allege the attacks were carried out by “Islamic fundamentalists,” a label that points to the complex sectarian and ideological dimensions of the security crisis spreading beyond Nigeria’s traditional northeastern conflict zones.

A Sinister New Tactic: Infiltration Before Annihilation

The pre-attack letter represents a sinister evolution in tactics. Rather than a surprise raid, the terrorists attempted a form of psychological and ideological warfare, announcing their presence under the guise of religious outreach before unleashing violence. This method aims to sow confusion, fear, and division within communities, making them more vulnerable.

The incident exposes critical gaps in intelligence and security response. Despite a five-month campaign of leafleting and a direct written warning to a community leader, no preventive action was taken, leaving residents catastrophically exposed.

A Litmus Test for Security and National Cohesion

This attack in Kwara State is a warning sign of expanding militant activity and a direct challenge to the authority of both traditional institutions and the state. The terrorists’ explicit goal—to have citizens renounce the government—frames the violence as an insurrection.

The question for Nigerian authorities is whether they can decode and counter this new tactic of deceptive infiltration before it is replicated in other vulnerable communities. For the people of Woro, the bizarre warning letter now stands as a haunting testament to a failure of protection, preceding unimaginable loss.
