Morocco’s head coach, Walid Regragui, has his sights set on breaking the “curse of the African Cup” as he unveiled his 27-man squad for the upcoming tournament in Ivory Coast next month.

It’s been 47 long years since Morocco last lifted the continental trophy, but after a stunning run to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar last year, they’re flying high and considered one of the frontrunners to claim the crown this time around.

But hold on, Nigeria’s Super Eagles aren’t ready to be counted out just yet! We haven’t forgotten the taste of victory since 2013, and despite the daily hustle and bustle in this great nation, a win at the AFCON would bring a wave of joy and pride that washes over everything.

“The more times the Africa Cup comes around, the further we seem to get from the last time we won it,” admitted Coach Regragui. “But that’s not a reason to put pressure on ourselves. We’re going there to play our game, give it our all, and come home with no regrets.”

Morocco’s history with the trophy has been a mixed bag. Since their 1976 triumph, they only reached the final once again in 2004, only to be edged out by the host nation, Tunisia. And last year in Cameroon, Egypt sent them packing in the quarter-finals.

“The key is our mindset,” emphasized Regragui. “We have to go there with total confidence to break this African Cup curse.”

The coach has kept the core of his World Cup squad intact, the same fearless players who toppled Belgium, Spain, and Portugal before narrowly falling to France in the semis. Stars like Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi, Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri, and Manchester United’s Sofyan Amrabat will be leading the charge once again.

But Regragui is also looking to the future, injecting some fresh blood into the mix. Young talents like PSV’s Ismael Saibari and Real Betis defender Chadi Riad, who captained Morocco’s victorious Under-23 AFCON team this year, are ready to prove their worth on the big stage.

The Atlas Lions face DR Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia in the group stages, kicking off their journey on January 13th. Buckle up, football fans, because this AFCON is shaping up to be really competitive

Remember, Nigeria’s Super Eagles are also hungry for glory, so get ready for an epic showdown when these two African giants clash on the pitch! We’ll be cheering for both teams, hoping for a tournament filled with beautiful goals, skillful plays, and most importantly, the spirit of sportsmanship and unity that binds Africa together.
