Plot Summary

The story follows Ese (Adaobi Dibor), a determined photojournalist who travels to Ile Agbadami, the same rural community where her sister Onome (Bimbo Ademoye) disappeared two years earlier under mysterious circumstances.

Her arrival triggers a chain of unsettling events. Guided by Kazeem (Taye Arimoro), Ese finds a diary among her sister’s belongings — one that begins to unveil dark secrets surrounding the town and its people. As she digs deeper, her one-week visit turns into a descent into danger, deception, and self-discovery.

First Impressions

Right from the opening scene, Thicker Than Water captures attention with its crisp visuals and eerie tone. The first act is fast-paced, intriguing, and filled with emotional tension that pulls the viewer in.

The performances are among the film’s strongest elements. Adaobi Dibor is exceptional as Ese, delivering a heartfelt performance that combines vulnerability and determination. Bimbo Ademoye and Taye Arimoro complement her perfectly, while the supporting cast — including the actors who played Tiny and Ola — give believable performances.

The casting is commendable, particularly the younger version of Ese, whose resemblance and mannerisms add authenticity to the storytelling. Cinematography, sound design, and location choices all contribute richly to the film’s haunting atmosphere.

Themes and Execution

Thicker Than Water explores the emotional weight of family ties — how far one can go for blood, even when the relationship has soured. The film’s title perfectly captures its essence, emphasizing loyalty, betrayal, and sacrifice.

However, while the storytelling begins strong, it falters toward the end. The final act feels rushed and leaves several subplots hanging. The excessive use of profanity and a few mature scenes also feel unnecessary and slightly out of place.

Still, the film manages to sustain suspense, with unexpected twists and an underlying message that keeps the viewer invested.

Moral Takeaway

If there’s one lesson to draw from this story, it’s simple: trust no one. Every character seems to hide something, and that unpredictability becomes both the film’s strength and its weakness.

Lingering Questions

By the end, the film leaves audiences with more questions than answers:

  1. Why was their mother only referenced but never shown on screen?
  2. What purpose did the storyteller’s AI-animated sequence serve?
  3. Why did the number of people at the ritual scene suddenly increase?
  4. How did Ese’s friend find her exact location?
  5. What happened to Ola, Onome’s fiancé?
  6. Why did it take two years for certain events to unfold?
  7. How did Tiny find the group?
  8. Why were no arrests made?
  9. And how did Ese escape the water tank from her flashbacks?

The unanswered questions add mystery but also leave viewers slightly unsatisfied.

Final Thoughts

Thicker Than Water had all the ingredients to be a standout thriller — strong performances, gripping visuals, and an intriguing premise. However, it loses steam toward the end, leaving too many loose ends untied.

It’s a story rich in symbolism and suspense, but one that could have benefited from tighter writing and clearer resolutions. Still, for lovers of dark mysteries and emotional drama, it’s worth the watch.

Verdict: 5.8/10

A strong start and stellar performances can’t save Thicker Than Water from an ending that leaves you questioning more than it answers.

Have you watched it yet? What did you think?
