Alabama folk singer KL has announced the cancellation of a scheduled performance at the Kennedy Center on January 14, 2026. In a heartfelt note to fans, KL explained that the decision was not easy, especially as performing is how they make a living. But for KL, staying true to personal beliefs and defending the integrity of American history outweighs any paycheck.

“I won’t lie to you, canceling shows hurts. This is how I keep the lights on. But losing my integrity would cost me more than any paycheck,” KL wrote. They described their songs as a personal diary set to music, raw, honest, and unapologetically their truth. For them, performing under conditions that compromise these values is impossible.

Truth Over Branding

KL emphasized that America’s strength comes from the effort of ordinary people, not branding or ego. “When American history starts getting treated like something you can ban, erase, rename, or rebrand for somebody else’s ego, I can’t stand on that stage and sleep right at night,” they said. This sentiment has resonated deeply with fans, sparking an outpouring of support online.

Fans Show Support

Social media reactions highlight the admiration for KL’s courage. One fan wrote, “Good on you. I so often feel helpless to challenge the wrongs that keep happening. BRAVA to you for making a stand. It will hurt your pocketbook but nourish your soul.” Another added, “WOW that’s awesome. I never heard of you before, but I’m going to buy your music now to help make up for whatever you were going to get paid at the Kennedy Center. I hope more musicians follow your lead.”

Connecting Through Music

Despite the canceled event, KL plans to keep the connection alive with fans. On January 14, they will host a live show from home, allowing anyone to watch from their couch. “I know money’s tight and travel’s hard right now. Let’s stay connected through the music. Thanks for having my back,” KL said. They also thanked fans for donations sent via Venmo, noting how small acts of kindness help keep music on the road.

Courage in the Arts

KL’s stand represents more than a single performance, it’s a call for artists to prioritize integrity and truth. Their decision challenges other musicians and creatives to consider the ethical and social impact of their work. In a time of political and cultural turbulence, KL’s courage has earned admiration from across the country, with fans praising them for defending real American values.

How to Support

Fans have suggested crowdfunding options to make up for lost income, ensuring that artists who prioritize truth over profit can continue to thrive.

KL’s story reminds us that standing up for what is right often comes at a cost, but the respect and loyalty earned through honesty and courage are priceless.
