In preparation for the governorship election set for September 21, 2024, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) began airlifting election materials for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Benin, Edo State, on Wednesday.
The Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information, Group Captain Kabiru Ali, signed a statement stating, “This action is a part of a larger effort to ensure timely and secure delivery of sensitive materials necessary for the smooth conduct of the elections.”
The airlift operation, which aims to facilitate logistics and ensure a peaceful election process in Edo State, demonstrates the collaboration between NAF and INEC.
” Recall that the NAF has reaffirmed its commitment to providing airlift for the prompt movement of electoral materials during a recent meeting with Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC.
The meeting was presided over by Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS).
“The NAF has fulfilled its constitutional duty to provide military assistance to civil authority by doing this.”
In Essence
This collaboration between NAF and INEC is essential in addressing the logistical challenges that often arise in Nigerian elections, particularly in the movement of election materials to remote or sensitive areas.
The involvement of the military in these operations helps maintain the integrity of the process by safeguarding materials from tampering or delays.
The NAF’s role also underscores the broader need for inter-agency collaboration to ensure peaceful elections, especially in areas where security could be a concern.
By providing military assistance to civil authorities, NAF demonstrates its dedication to supporting democratic processes in Nigeria.
