A Senior Special Adviser to President Tinubu, Otega Ogra, has attributed the current hunger and economic hardship in Nigeria to Naira redesign policy by former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
In an Arise TV appearance, Ogra noted that farmers were unable to plant because of this policy leading to a decline in food output. He emphasized on the need for comprehensive approaches in addressing food security issues rather than developing short-term solutions.
“The Naira redesign policy ruined our agricultural sector” said Ogra. “Many farmers were unable to access cash to buy inputs, which led to reduced food output. This has resulted in starvation and financial hardship across the country.”
According to him, equipment for mechanized farming instruments is now being imported by President Tinubu’s administration to address food insecurity. Moreover, there was some temporary opening of borders for food importation to supplement local production, and initiatives to support smallholder farmers are being implemented.
Addressing Food Security is a process – Ogra said.
In this regard, he urged all Nigerians to understand it is an ordinary process but does take time, like everything else in life. He emphasized that the administration is actively working to revitalize agriculture and boost food availability
