Paris Saint-Germain’s Nasser Al-Khelaifi has admitted he will not run to replace Gianni Infantino as the FIFA president, with claims that he wanted to work at the World governing football federation ‘putting a question mark to sleep’.
During the celebrations after PSG beat Aston Villa to claim the UEFA Super Cup with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday, Al-Khelaifi was asked about claims regarding the Paris-based giant’s chief aiming for world football.
On what exactly these claims were, the Qatari businessman confidently replied with “I am very happy being president of Paris Saint-Germain, and happy to continue in this position.”
Al-Khelaifi’s declaration appears to extinguish the growing rumours in which he was tipped to go against FIFA chief Infantino at next March’s FIFA presidential election. The world’s football premier body executive has fallen from grace under multiple scandals that have plagued FIFA.
Many sources suggested he would become a candidate after European circles expressed their endorsement towards Al-Khelaifi. Before Wednesday night’s showpiece match,
PSG president met UEFA’s president Aleksander Ceferin, and the reports suggest both managers of those elite clubs met to discuss FIFA matters, including developments and preparation in what will be FIFA’s global tournament scheduled for 2029, the Club World Cup.
