Yakubu Maikyau, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, has mourned the death of Justice Chima Nweze, a Supreme Court Justice.
Justice Nweze had reportedly died on Sunday, July 31, at the age of 64.
In as much as the NBA President is mourning the death of Nweze, the Supreme Court is yet to officially confirm his death.
The Director of Information, Supreme Court, Akande Festus had remarked that he was unaware of Nweze’s death.
Meanwhile the NBA president had in a statement on Monday issued by the Publicity Secretary, Akorede Lawal, said that Nweze had been a shrewd jurist whose judgements had shaped and impacted the nation’s law and jurisprudence. Additionally, Maikyau had lauded the deceased justice, stating that he had been a disciplined, assiduous and valiant judge.
The late Justice Nweze had gained attention in 2020, over his dissenting judgment where he announced Emeka Ihedioha, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, candidate as the winner of the 2019 Governorship election in Imo State.
Nweze had also been the judge that declared the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as the rightful candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC for Yobe North Senatorial District during the February 25 general elections.
Justice Nweze hailed from Obollo, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State and was born on September 25, 1958.
