The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reiterated its position on power distribution companies’ (DisCos) responsibility to either replace or repair malfunctioning electricity transformers.
Mrs Aisha Mamoud, the NERC Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, made this known during a three-day Customer Complaints Resolution Meeting between the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) and customers in Cross River state.
This meeting was aimed at enlightening customers about the electricity industry as well as their rights while resolving complaints bordering on metering, high billing and transformer vandalism.
NERC insisted that customers pay electricity bills as payment for services delivery, and not for transformer repairs or replacements. The commission assured that all complaint would be addressed promptly.
PHEDC acknowledged its inability to meet demand due to vandalism, noting that most transformer issues are due to vandalism. The company has replaced their transformers on several occasion and expressively added that they would continue improving response times when it comes to legitimate customer complaints.
This meeting illustrated how much NERC is committed to safeguarding consumers’ rights as well as ensuring proper distribution of electricity.
