Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gusau has stated he has no knowledge that Super Eagles coach Finidi George has submitted his resignation. This follows online reports claiming George resigned subsequent to the NFF’s announcement of plans to recruit an “expatriate technical adviser” for the Eagles. The decision came after the team’s disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they have secured only three points out of twelve, placing fifth in Group C and jeopardizing their chances of qualification.
The disappointing performances of the Eagles frustrated Nigeria’s passionate football fans, who are still reeling from the team’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Following the NFF’s announcement on Thursday, there were mixed reactions, with some supporters urging both the federation’s board members and Finidi to step down.
Reports indicate that Finidi was angry because the NFF leadership met with the sports minister two days ago but did not mention that players arrived late to the camp. Additionally, they did not mobilize Nigerians in Ivory Coast to support the Eagles in their match against Benin Republic last Monday.
The reports further stated that Finidi, who has overseen only two Eagles games since assuming office in April, resigned from his position on Tuesday morning.
However, when contacted via WhatsApp to confirm Finidi’s resignation, Gusau responded, “Not yet aware.”
