Nigeria secured their spot at the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals with an impressive 6-2 win over Egypt.
It was Nigeria’s last match of their group, and following a surprise 2-1 defeat to Malawi, both the national and the Nigerian side knew the Super Falcons were going to fight for survival, putting out their strongest performance of the tournament.
Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring for the home side from the penalty, and Gift Monday netted the second for Nigeria with help from an Rinsola Babajide assist on the stroke of halftime
The Super Falcons’ lead was instantly reduced by a Nadine Ghazi penalty. However, Nigeria stamped their mark on the match in the second half. Uchenna Kanu drove the Super Falcons into a 3-1 advantage prior to a Christy Uche Ibe calm spot-kick to increase the lead to 4-1.
Ghazi rounded off her hat trick and added another strike to narrow Nigeria’s lead and keep Egypt on the score sheet to1-4 before Nigeria added the 5th and 6th a toppin stoppages-time courtesy of Rasheedat Ajibade and Joy Omewa.
Both teams qualified top of Group C based on the tie-break rule. The African giants are level on points with Malawi after the late defeat Zambian 2-1 in there game of the group.
Nigeria will now look to build on this impressive showing going into the latter stages of the tournament.
