On Monday, Will Stevens, the United States Consul General in Lagos, emphasised his country’s commitment to a shared partnership and the improvement of bilateral relations with Nigeria.
Stevens mentioned this during his address to commemorate America’s 248th Independence Day, which was sponsored by the US Consulate in Lagos.
He stated that as the world’s two largest presidential democracies, Nigeria and the United States share deeply held ideals and history that serve as strong examples for the rest of the globe.
He stated: “On this day commemorating the establishment of America, friends and family join together to rejoice, reflect on our past, present, and future selves, and to uphold the values that have brought us this far.
According to him, Nigeria and the United States share a commitment to a people-centered administration.
“We realise that democracy is a never-ending journey in which elected authorities and citizens collaborate to address the needs of all and make compromises, sacrifices, and strive together to make the place better than it was.
“This makes Nigeria and the U.S. natural partners, friends and allies on so many important issues across the continent and the world.
Steven stated that from the beginning of 2024, the US government’s remarkable attention to Nigeria has reflected the depth and importance of both countries’ partnerships.
He praised the Nigerian diaspora, stating that more than 700,000 Nigerian Americans were the most successful diaspora community in the United States.
The ambassador also praised Nigerians’ entrepreneurial spirit, stating that it reflected their desire to improve themselves, their communities, and the globe in general.
In his speech, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Nigeria’s partnership with the United States.
He believes that both countries have much more in common in terms of culture, art, technology, politics, innovation, creativity, and many other areas.
He praised Stevens for his efforts in Lagos, saying he had helped Nigeria’s computer economy thrive and provided unrivalled support for the creative industry.
Sanwo-Olu urged Nigerians to believe in their country and acknowledge that there are issues all across the world.
“America has been through its own for 248 years. It has toppled, fallen, and risen, but they continue to move and become stronger by the day.
“As Nigerians, let us raise our heads up and say indeed we will play our parts with every strength in our body, ensuring we are the best in every part of the world,” according to him.
Why this matters?
The US’s commitment to Nigeria can contribute to regional stability and security in West Africa. With Nigeria being a significant player in African politics and security, US support can enhance efforts to combat terrorism, insurgency, and other security challenges in the region.
