The Super Eagles of Nigeria triumphed over their arch-rivals, the Black Stars of Ghana, in a thrilling 2-1 victory on Friday night. This friendly match, played in the Moroccan city of Marrakech, saw Nigeria claim bragging rights with two well-taken goals.
Nigeria, still buzzing after their impressive runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), missed some key players due to injuries. This included the talented attacker Victor Osimhen, who was recently crowned CAF Player of the Year, and defender William Troost-Ekong.
Despite the changes, the new-look Nigerian team took control of the game from the very beginning. They dominated possession and threatened the Ghanaian goal repeatedly. However, they couldn’t find the back of the net in the early stages.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 37th minute. A Ghanaian defender handled the ball inside the penalty area, giving Nigeria a golden opportunity. Up stepped Cyriel Dessers, the striker from Rangers, who coolly converted the spot-kick to put the Super Eagles ahead.
The second half saw Nigeria continue to press for more goals. Their efforts were rewarded when Ademola Lookman, the Atalanta winger, scored a beautiful goal to double their lead.
However, the drama wasn’t over yet. Ghana, who had a player sent off earlier in the second half, pulled one goal back from a penalty kick taken by Jordan Ayew. This late consolation goal wasn’t enough though, as Nigeria secured a well-deserved victory.
