The Abia State Police Command has dismissed Police Corporal Obagi Njok from the Nigeria Police Force for abusive behaviour and misuse of firearms.
This dismissal is coming on the heels of an incident where firearm was misused by the disgraced cop which ultimately led to the death of an Abian businessman, Emmanuel Okocha.
This news was made available to news men by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, on Wednesday.
Prior to the dismissal, the suspect had faced disciplinary action and upon being found guilty of the firearm misuse after a thorough investigation by the police command, he would be prosecuted in court for criminal charges.
The deceased’s family members had been duly carried along at every step, to get justice for their loved one.
The Abia State Police Command had arrested Njok for fatally shooting Okocha on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, for reportedly refusing to give him (Njok) money at a checkpoint.
Njok had been attached to the Abayi Police Division before the unfortunate incident happened, according to the Abia State PPRO, ASP Maureen Chinaka.
Why it Matters
This dismissal sends a strong message: police brutality won’t be tolerated. Corporal Njok’s alleged misuse of a firearm tragically claimed an innocent life. Now, he is facing criminal charges, and the family of the deceased is clamouring for justice. This incident underscores the crucial need for proper police training and accountability to rebuild trust with the community.
