The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has allocated over N5 billion in public funds for the renovation of the official residence of Vice President Kashim Shettima in Lagos State. The renovation costs, which happened from May to September 2024, have caused public discussion and worry, especially because many Nigerians are struggling with financial difficulties.

Data from GovSpend, a  civic platform that tracks and analyses government spending, shows that a total of N5,034,077,063 was used to upgrade the President’s residence in Lagos. The payments were split into two parts: the first, on May 31, 2024, was N2,827,119,051 and went to Denderi Investment Limited, an engineering company hired for the renovation. A second payment of N726,748,686 was made on September 5, 2024, also to Denderi Investment Limited, for Phase 2 of the renovation project.

These expenditures are part of the continuous work to improve the Vice President’s official residence in Lagos. However, they have led to concerns about the government’s priorities given the current economic situation.
