Nigerians made a remarkable impact at the 2026 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) in London on Sunday, with actress Wunmi Mosaku and the Nigerian-produced film ‘My Father’s Shadow’ among the evening’s standout winners.
Mosaku was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in Sinners, adding to her impressive BAFTA record, which includes a previous win in the same category in 2017 for Damilola, Our Loved Boy.
The Nigerian-born actress, who has featured in both British and Hollywood projects, has earned multiple nominations over the years and continues to be recognized as one of Africa’s leading talents on the international stage.

The film ‘My Father’s Shadow’, created by Nigerian brothers Akinola Davies Jr and Wale Davies, also captured attention by winning Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Since its release, the film has achieved notable international acclaim, including being the first Nigerian feature selected for the official lineup at the Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered in the Un Certain Regard section to critical praise.
Set in Lagos during the politically turbulent 1993 election, My Father’s Shadow follows the story of a father and his two sons navigating the city amid a period of national uncertainty, blending personal drama with a reflection on Nigeria’s historical moment.
These achievements highlight the growing presence and influence of Nigerian creatives on global film platforms, reinforcing their reputation as major contributors to international cinema.
