The National Bureau of Statistics has published its report on Internally Generated Revenue for 2023, revealing that Nigerians paid N40.14 billion in road taxes to state governments. This amount is a 63.36% rise compared to 2022.
Lagos State collected the most, with N16.74 billion, while Ebonyi State had an extraordinary 3,804.32% increase. Other states, including Rivers, Sokoto, and Yobe, also saw significant growth.
On the other hand, Enugu, Katsina, Niger, and Cross River states saw decreases in their road tax collections. The Federal Capital Territory did not collect any road tax revenue.
Overall, the total internally generated revenue for Nigerian states in 2023 was N2.43 trillion, which is a 26% increase from 2022. A presidential committee has suggested removing taxes on essential items like food, public transportation, and housing.
