On Saturday, January 11, 2025, Nigeria experienced its first major power outage of the year as the national grid collapsed. This unexpected failure plunged the entire nation into darkness, affecting millions of households and businesses alike.
The collapse which reportedly occurred around 3 PM, reduced power generation from 2,111 MW earlier in the day to a mere 390 MW. This incident now makes it the 13th grid collapse in the past 13 months, highlighting the ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s power sector.
At the time of filing this report, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has initiated restoration efforts, but the exact cause of the collapse is still undisclosed. The recurring grid failures have not only shown how incompetent the government has been towards solving this issue, but the concerns about inadequate infrastructure, vandalism, and fuel supply issues the nation currently faces.
Until when will the Nigerian government step up to tackle this shameful and depressing issue?
