Nigeria’s Super Falcons soared high in their quest for a place in the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with an outstanding 5-0 victory against Cape Verde at Abuja’s Moshood Abiola Stadium.

Uchenna Kanu and Esther Okoronkwo exhibited their prowess by scoring two goals each, complemented by Monday Gift’s contribution, leading the Super Falcons to a resounding triumph over their opponents.

The game commenced with the record WAFCON champions taking an early lead as Kanu found the net just seven minutes into the match from close range. Despite Cape Verde’s attempts to level the score, a remarkable 16th-minute save by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie thwarted their efforts.

Nigeria’s dominance persisted as Gift capitalized on a goalmouth scramble, doubling the Super Falcons’ advantage nine minutes later. Rasheedat Ajibade narrowly missed a chance to extend the lead in the 33rd minute.

However, Kanu continued her impressive display, converting a Toni Payne cross right at the 45-minute mark, securing a comfortable 3-0 lead for the home side.

The relentless Nigerian team maintained pressure in the second half, with substitute Esther Okoronkwo amplifying their lead to four goals in the 66th minute, assisted by Esther Akudo Ogbonna’s cross. Okoronkwo further showcased her skill, securing a brace eleven minutes later, propelling Nigeria to a commanding 5-0 lead.

With a job well done, interim coach Madugu Justine made strategic substitutions, paving the way for Tochukwu Oluehi and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu to join the action.

The upcoming second leg in Praia, Cape Verde’s capital, will determine the ultimate victor who secures a spot at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco.

Madugu’s adept guidance marked her third appearance coaching the Super Falcons, steering the team in the absence of Head Coach Randy Waldrum.

Nigeria’s women’s football prowess shines brightly, affirming their strength and determination, signaling a promising future in continental tournaments. Their stellar performance leaves little doubt that they are a force to reckon with, undoubtedly eyeing victory in the upcoming AFCON.
