Over recent years, prison breaks in the country are slowly becoming a recurrent phenomenon. One could wake up to the news that there has been a jailbreak in a prison facility in his/her state.
Last year, Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola mandated all prison commanders to use every power to defend against internal and external attacks. This announcement was issued on Friday 30 April 2021 when the Minister met with the top officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) at their headquarters.
However, the Kuje correctional facility in Abuja has been the latest in a long line of Prison breaks that have occurred in Nigeria. This unfortunate event took place on 5 July 2022 Kuje prison suffer gunmen attack inside the Nigerian capital Abuja on Tuesday night.
Kogi jailbreak
Which occurred on Sunday,12 September 2021. Unknown gunmen attacked the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kabba in Kogi State.
Edo Prison attack
Which happened in October 2020, during the End SARS protests whereby miscreants and robbers broke into various prisons in Benin, Edo state, and released inmates. A lot of jailbreaks took place on 19th October.
Warri prison break
That took place on Thursday 22 October 2020 about the same time Ikoyi prison happened whereby miscreants broke into Warri Prison situated at Okere Road in Delta State, southern Nigeria.
Abia jailbreak
This happened on October 22, 2020, at Afara Umuahia Correctional Centre when the Nigerian Army, Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the armed unit of the Nigerian Correctional Centre, repelled and resisted an attempted jailbreak.
Bauchi jailbreak
This occurred on April 9, 2021. Two officials of di Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) at Bauchi were injured during a riot at the facility. No inmates escaped.
Others were the Kano, Oyo, Minna, and Jos Jailbreaks which all happened in 2021 except for the Jos Prison attack which took place in 2018
