Valeria Wasserman Chomsky, the wife of renowned linguist and activist Noam Chomsky, has dismissed the claims that he had passed away. She responded to an email inquiry from The Associated Press, stating that the reports were false.
Noam Chomsky, aged 95, was recently hospitalized in Brazil as he recovered from a stroke he experienced last year. However, according to a statement from the Beneficencia Portuguesa hospital in Sao Paulo, he was discharged on Tuesday and will continue his treatment at home.
The Chomskys have been living in Brazil since 2015. Noam Chomsky, well-known for his critiques of U.S. foreign policy, taught at MIT for many years. In 2017, he became part of the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Earlier on Tuesday, false reports of Noam Chomsky’s death caused his name to trend on X. Jacobin and The New Statesman published obituaries for him, but Jacobin later updated its headline, and The New Statesman removed its article entirely. A Brazilian news site, Diario do Centro do Mundo, also retracted its story and issued a correction.
