Mayor Zohran Mamdani has finally received federal security clearance, nine months after taking office, allowing him to participate in classified briefings about terrorism threats and other emergencies impacting New York City.
“I have my security clearance now,” Mamdani told reporters at an unrelated press conference Wednesday in Brooklyn . A spokesperson for Mamdani would not clarify exactly when the Trump administration provided the clearance, only saying it happened at some point this week.
The thumbs-up comes just days after Mamdani had a chummy meeting with President Donald Trump at Gracie Mansion during the United Nations General Assembly, though there is no indication that sit-down was a factor in the mayor finally being approved.
The Long Wait
The issue was highlighted earlier this month by Gothamist, which reported that Mamdani’s wait for a clearance was unusually long for a New York City mayor, given that he initiated his application shortly after taking office in January.
Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg received his clearance after roughly four months, while former Mayor Eric Adams obtained his within about five months. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio waited just over a year, partly because he applied late.

However, the nine-month wait for Mamdani comes amid a broader trend of lengthy delays in the issuance of federal security clearances. According to data from the Government Accountability Office, federal agencies were taking an average of 206 days to authorize 90% of security clearances in the second half of fiscal 2025 — 92 days longer than the government’s goal of 114 days.
Why It Matters
With the clearance, Mamdani can now participate in classified federal briefings, including ones held by the FBI regarding security threats . Up until now, he had been unable to take part in those meetings, though top members of his administration, including his chief counsel, Ramzi Kassem, and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, already held clearances.
The lack of briefings made headlines this month after it emerged that the mayor still did not have top-level clearance more than eight months into his tenure, raising concerns that he would be unable to react quickly during an emergency.
The Political Context
The long wait for Mamdani also came at a time when Trump used the security clearance process to exact political retribution. Last year, his administration revoked clearances for dozens of current and former government officials involved in investigations that Trump has labeled “witch hunts,” including the FBI probe into his 2016 campaign’s ties to Russia.
Trump also revoked clearances for New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, both of whom had led cases against the president.
Though they’ve since developed an almost shockingly cordial relationship, Mamdani and Trump were harsh critics of each other as recently as last year, when the mayor routinely called the president a “despot” and a “fascist”.
The Bottom Line
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani has received federal security clearance after a nine-month wait, allowing him to participate in classified briefings on terrorism and other threats to the city. The clearance came a week after his cordial meeting with Trump at Gracie Mansion. The delay was longer than for several recent mayors but aligned with broader federal slowdowns in processing clearances. Trump has previously used the clearance process to punish political opponents.
My Opinion
Nine months. That is how long it took for the mayor of America’s largest city to get the security clearance he needed to do his job. Not because he was a threat. Not because he failed a background check. But because the federal government — the same government that is supposed to be a partner in protecting New Yorkers — dragged its feet.
The timing is hard to ignore. Trump has used the clearance process to punish his enemies before. He stripped clearances from officials involved in investigations he did not like. He revoked them from Letitia James and Alvin Bragg. So when a Democratic mayor who once called Trump a “fascist” waits nine months for a clearance that his predecessors got in four or five, it is fair to ask why. Maybe it was just bureaucratic delay. Maybe it was something else. Either way, the result was the same: New York City’s mayor was left in the dark about threats to the city he was elected to protect.
Then Mamdani and Trump had a chummy meeting at Gracie Mansion. And suddenly, the clearance came through. I am not saying the meeting was transactional. But I am not saying it was either. In Trump’s Washington, everything is a transaction. The question is what Mamdani gave up to get what he was owed all along
