Mojisola Meranda officially moved into the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker’s office on Monday, causing a flurry of activity at the Assembly Complex. Videos circulating on social media showed jubilant supporters gathered to celebrate, praying and praising God as Meranda took her place in the Speaker’s seat. The Assembly heightened security ahead of the plenary session, anticipating tensions following the dramatic events that led to her assumption of office.
Obasa’s Impeachment Sparks Controversy
Meranda’s move into the office comes after the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025. Obasa was removed by a majority of House members over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation. He, however, continues to deny the allegations, demanding proof of the claims. On Saturday, Obasa boldly declared he was still the Speaker of the House.
Meranda Presides Despite Obasa’s Absence
Despite Obasa’s absence from previous sittings, Meranda has presided over two plenary sessions since his removal. Monday’s session marks her third, solidifying her position despite the former Speaker’s claims. The security measures at the Assembly Complex reflects the high cost involved in this transition of power, as Meranda continues to assert control over the office that Obasa has refused to relinquish in spirit, if not in practice.
As the Lagos state watches, it’s clear that the era of Obasa is over—at least for now.
