The Ogun State Government disputed accusations on Thursday that it spent N1 trillion to rebuild the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Motorway.
The administration disclosed this in a statement in response to claims of financial recklessness contained in a document titled “#Where is our money?” that is circulating on social media.
The statement, issued by the Special Adviser on Media to State Governor Kayode Akinmade, indicated that the write-up was created by the governor’s political rivals. The government refuted all claims in the write-up, characterising them as frivolous, unjustified, and a hatchet job.
What they’re saying
The statement said in part, “We wish to say clearly that the claims are wholly baseless, malicious, and designed solely to destroy the good image of the Governor Dapo Abiodun Administration and Ogun say Government personnel.
“To say the least, the claims are not only a ludicrous hatchet job, but also a product of the purveyors’ imagination. “It is crucial to note that the disgruntled people behind this deceptive propaganda have previously caused political unrest in Ogun State.
“Some of them deliberately engaged in ensuring that past administrations were distracted and unable to complete the course of government effectively. They are outraged and surprised that, even after a year into his second term, Governor Dapo Abiodun is still getting stronger and staying focused on his job.
“In their desperation and plot of shenanigans, they undoubtedly believe that draping a toga of corruption around the Governor’s neck will lower his burgeoning profile. They have failed miserably!”
Bottom Line
The statement emphasizes that these allegations are attempts to tarnish the governor’s image and disrupt his administration’s progress, especially considering that Governor Dapo Abiodun is in his second term.
In such cases, it’s essential to critically evaluate the situation from multiple perspectives. The government’s denial does not necessarily mean the allegations are false, nor does the existence of such claims automatically prove corruption. The truth often lies in a thorough and transparent investigation, which would ideally be carried out by independent bodies or credible institutions.
This kind of political tussle is not uncommon in Nigerian politics, where opposition figures and parties often leverage such accusations to weaken the incumbent administration’s public standing.
On the other hand, governments sometimes dismiss legitimate concerns as mere political attacks. Therefore, public discourse should focus on demanding transparency, accountability, and evidence from all sides to ensure that such allegations are either substantiated or conclusively disproven.
