In Manila, Philippines, a marine tanker carrying industrial fuel sank in rough seas off the coast on Thursday, resulting in a significant oil spill. The ship was carrying 1,494 metric tonnes of industrial fuel.
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista reported that 16 out of the 17 crew members from the MT Terra Nova have been rescued. Coastal Guards are currently searching for a missing crew member from the vessel. The ship capsized off the coastal town of Limay in Bataan province.
Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Armando Balilo stated in a briefing that a 97-meter Coast Guard vessel has been deployed to locate the missing crew member and mitigate the oil spill. Smaller vessels are on standby, waiting for weather conditions to improve before they can join the efforts.
Impact of Weather on Operations
Adverse weather conditions are affecting both the search operations and efforts to contain the oil spill, hampering progress in containing the spill and locating the missing crew member. The area where the ship sank is near the capital, Manila, and aerial footage shows an oil slick spreading roughly two nautical miles, driven by strong waves.
Investigation and Environmental Concerns
Authorities are investigating whether the sinking of the MT Terra Nova is related to Typhoon Gaemi, which recently caused widespread flooding in Manila and surrounding towns. The oil spill poses a significant environmental threat, potentially affecting the marine ecosystem in the area for months. Oil spills are known to cause extensive damage to marine life, making this a national environmental disaster. The country’s environment ministry is also assessing the impact of this oil spillage on the environment at the request of the Philippine President, Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Government Response and Challenges
Philippine authorities are now faced with the urgent task of containing the oil spill to minimize its impact on Manila and protect the city’s economic interests. Efforts are being made to ensure that the spill does not reach the capital, but the rough weather continues to pose a significant challenge.
