The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for pulling out of the state’s local government elections, describing the move as an act of cowardice.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday after casting his vote at Polling Unit 5, Ugbo Ward 4, in Ilaje Local Government Area, Aiyedatiwa expressed disbelief over the PDP’s decision, suggesting it was likely motivated by fear of losing.
“For PDP to pull out, that is cowardice. They participated in the whole process. ODIEC released the timetable for the election on time. I don’t know the reason for that [withdrawal]. Maybe the fear of losing. Every election has its own logistics, and other political parties are participating. So, whatever reason that made them withdraw, I am not privy to that,” Aiyedatiwa said.
Commitment to Grassroots Development
The governor emphasized that the local government elections were a critical step in fostering grassroots governance and accelerating development across the state. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to ensuring local governments function effectively in line with the law.
“The local government is crucial to grassroots development. This election is a clear indication of our commitment to enhancing this level of governance,” he stated.
Smooth Conduct of Elections
Governor Aiyedatiwa commended the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) for its efficient handling of the electoral process, praising the peaceful atmosphere and orderly participation of voters.
“I just cast my vote without any crisis. This is just what happened during the November 16 governorship election, which was adjudged to be free and fair. The materials arrived early, the security is in place, and the citizens are here participating. At the end of the day, just as we had in the last election, we don’t expect anything less,” Aiyedatiwa remarked.
Deputy Governor Applauds Voter Turnout
In Owo Local Government Area, Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami also participated in the polls, casting his vote at Igbooroko Unit 16, Ward 3, at 9:45 a.m. Adelami lauded the impressive voter turnout and encouraged citizens to support the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The turnout is impressive. I encourage all eligible voters to cast their votes and support the APC for continued development in our state,” Adelami said.
Bottom Line
The Ondo State local government elections have drawn attention for both the smooth organization of the process and the controversy surrounding the PDP’s withdrawal. While the APC leaders continue to rally support, the governor sees the election as a critical milestone in strengthening governance at the grassroots.
