Nigerian forward, Victor Osimhen, was on target on Monday night as Napoli eked out a 1-1 draw against home side Cagliari in a Serie A encounter at the Sardegna Arena to surpass his tally of goals for the Partenopei.
Osimhen who started the game on the bench was a second half substitute, coming on nine minutes after Napoli had gone behind courtesy of Gaston Pereiro’s sizzling left foot which beat the goalkeeper from outside the box on 58 minutes.
However, the Nigerian matador was on hand to rescue a point with three minutes left when he popped up to nod home Mario Rui’s cross following a good clearance by David Ospina deep from inside the Napoli half.
Ospina was on hand to wade off two quick attacks on his goal which kept Napoli in the game and ultimately allowed Osimhen to rise above all to head home the dramatic equaliser and spare the injury-ravaged visitors heartache.
The 23-year old has now scored 11 times in 20 games this season, thus surpassing last season’s record of 10 goals in 30 matches across all competitions.
With both leaders AC Milan and second-placed Inter Milan surrendering points over the weekend, Napoli had a chance to reclaim the top spot with a win in Sardinia, but they struggled to get going.
