The Palestinian Health Ministry has confirmed on Monday that a 17-year-old Palestinian teenager, Ramzi Hamed, has lost his life after being shot by Israeli troops last week. The confrontation took place near the West Bank settlement of Ofra, close to his hometown of Silwad, north of Ramallah.
The incident is part of a continuing wave of violence between Israelis and Palestinians in the region, which has been ongoing for the past year and a half. The northern West Bank has witnessed escalating tension, with Palestinian groups engaging in shooting attacks against Israelis, the Israeli military conducting frequent arrest raids, and extremist Jewish settlers increasing their attacks.
On Monday, 17 Palestinians were arrested across the West Bank, with five of them suspected of involvement in clashes that resulted in the death of a Palestinian on Friday.
This surge in violence is one of the most severe escalations between Israelis and Palestinians in recent decades. Throughout the year, more than 160 Palestinians have lost their lives due to Israeli fire in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, while at least 30 people have been killed in Palestinian attacks against Israelis.
The West Bank, along with the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, was captured by Israel during the 1967 Mideast war, and these territories remain at the heart of the Palestinians’ aspirations for an independent state.
